Scan Frequently Asked Questions
| Does
the pregnancy scans present any risk to the baby? |
The
many research studies and reports over the years have not reported
untoward effects of ultrasound on the baby or mother. 4D
and 3D ultrasound is no different to conventional 2D Pregnancy
Ultrasound scanning except in this case, the images are collected
by the ultrasound machine, processed in its computer memory to give
a 3-dimentional image. Therefore, safety and risk are not affected
in any known way.
We
normally would expect a referral from your General Practitioner
except for the 4D
Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans.
We are also obliged to inform your GP of any investigations or results,
unless you do not have one.
Overseas
patients will not be required to have a local general practitioner.
| Do
I need to drink water? |
No
you do not need to drink water for pelvic ultrasound or 4D Scans.
| At
what age of my pregnancy can I book a 4D scan? |
At
what age of my pregnancy can I book a 4D
scan?
For best results we advise a period between 20 and 32 weeks.
When
is the best time to scan twins?
Women with twins should visit at around 27 weeks, as twins have
less space around them.
| Is
there anything I can do to improve my images? |
The
position of the baby and the water around the baby are the most
important factor of any images during the pregnancy ultrasound.
However, in many instances, excessive abdominal fat can have some
impact on quality. In short there is not very much you can do prior
to your visit to influence quality.
| How
is the scan performed? |
Pregnancy
Ultrasound Scans will be performed by a fully trained ultrasonographer
or consultant on your abdomen, like early pregnancy scans. We do
not perform internal scan for the purpose of 4D or 3D scans.
| Can
I bring family members along? |
Of
course you can. Although we encourage you to bring family members,
please be reasonable about numbers, as we can not accommodate more
than 3 observers in the rooms.
| Will
you tell me if you see any abnormality? |
4D
or 3D ultrasound scans are primarily not a diagnostic tool for
pregnancy abnormalities. If problems are identified, however, you
will be told, so you can be checked at your Hospital. In exceptional
circumstances and with your permission, we may have to contact your
local hospital.
| What
can I expect for after the pregnancy scan? |
We
give you copies of images taken during your scans, including a DvD,
some still images on a CD and soft copy prints.
